Blocking a highway and destroying a transformer station over a land claim despute that was pertainant 164 years ago is a little much. Not good for the reputation.
Valid til people realize they can't milk the system forever...
WHAT THE F**K!!! Where do you people get off? I mean, for the love of all things holy. You don't pay tax, your kids go to school on the Governments tab, you can hunt and fish when and where you want too, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!?!? Granted, you got some shitty treatment years back, and for that I am truly sorry. But enough is enough. My great great (insert great{s} here) ancestors were treated like SHITE by the Romans, should I be ranting and raving to the Italians for money and land? You're treated a HELL of a lot better here then your bretheran in other countries. Perhaps it's time to stop being so stand off-ish and becoming a functioning part of this country?
And while I'm on the subject, when can we stop paying for what people did like a hundred years ago? I sure as hell wasn't there, and there prolly aren't that many people who were, from either side. How about we start phasing stuff out. You know, so eventually you have to put your kids through school yourselves, do some work, pay some taxes. Funny as it may sound, you are no different then I am. The colour of your skin, or your cultural heritage not withstanding. And those differences should not constitute a free ride.
I have a feeling there'll be more blogs to follow on this subject.
I'm out, Cheers

its not a free ride. If canada paid every status carrying native 1 million dollars each and told them that cashing the cheque ends the free ride, land claims, tax releif, free education, free medical, dental, perscriptions, I wonder what the resonse would be? Great or no way?
I would think that it would be no way. Many, no wait all the natives that I know work. Most are in the trades as iron workers, or other welding professions. most earn 50 to 100k annually. So, I would not say they are lazy in any sence of the word.
However, being lazy and feeling that the country or rather every citizen of a country needs to continually appoligize, pay for and continually pay for bad negotation skills 100 years ago is a litte much.
I used to live in Caledonia Ontario, and thank god we sold before the land claim started. It has disrupted many years of community relations that will not be repaired with a cheque from the provincial or federal government.
Stop the bleeding and the discontent from both sides. The natives may feel powerless against the government and this could be contributing to the types of rally's and protests that are undertaken on behalf of the natives and the land claims that are not settled. Apparently there are over 1000 land claims.
Either give them all the land they want. (note that would be Victoria, squamish, reginia, Toronto, Simcoe, and 6 miles on either side of the Grand River from Lake Huron to Lake Erie or cut every native a cheque for a million dollars and say we are sorry for the last time. I would perfer to see the cost added to the national debt and we can start to pay off the debt rather than waiting and bleeding the country and the provinces through litigation, and small settlements that have little impact to canadians and the natives.
I am not an expert in native relations, nor do I profess to understand all the complexities of the situation that is ongoing. I only have information that I am prevy to and what is written. I do understand that our media (main stream), slants the stories that are reported to meet the opinions of the people and rarely challenges peoples intilects and would never allow a story to be published that would require any thought on the part of the reader. If we are spoon fed what we need to know we are happy. Apparently , the natives are not happy with what we have been feeding them since they are retalliating.
all the best,
